Trying to figure out the best way to learn guitar? My advice to those wanting to learn guitar is to stat out with a good instrument. Learning guitar is a commitment of both time and money and if you make that commitment your life will change.

So, what is the best way to learn guitar. The answer is; there really is no single "best way"  People learn in different ways and that is why there are so many ways to approach the process.

Many will tell you that the best way to learn guitar is simply by playing. Sounds simple enough but if you're just starting out, you can't play anything. Most guitar teachers insist that the best way to learn guitar is to commit to attending lessons while also practicing the necessary skills at home.  Others will tell you that the easiest, most enjoyable, and most effective way to learn guitar is to learn music that you enjoy. This is beneficial because when you are first learning a song, you will have to play it over and over many times. It help if it's a song you love to listen to rather than twinkle twinkle little star. Still other will say that one of the secrets to learning guitar and any musical skill for that matter, is by singing what your playing simultaneously. If you are willing to dedicate a lot of time, as well as some money to this, private lessons are definitely one of the best ways to learn guitar. Taking guitar lessons from a teacher is certainly one of the quickest ways to learn. If you are bound by time and can't afford private lessons, consider learning guitar via videos or DVDs.

Additionally, online guitar lessons are a great alternative to a private teacher. Today, many types of guitar lessons are available online. While personal guitar lessons are great, many of us don't have the money or time to set aside for them.

One of the first tasks you'll be confronted with is learning to master guitar scales, modes, and improvisation. And while there is much benefit in this process, you can spend as a lot of time practicing scales, but it is not enough. Scales are the building blocks of music and, of course, you will have to memorize some scales. But remember it is one thing to play the notes. It is another thing entirely to make the music. As a teacher of mine once said, "Make your scales like a pear necklace - each note, perfect, round, and beautiful.

Practice

It does not take long at all to learn to play guitar, as long you have a constant practice schedule and stick to it. Steady practice helps you to improve on the skills that you learn and ingrains them in you until you can play what you have been practicing without even thinking about it.

As you practice exercises on your guitar you need to play slowly and with a little more force to get a good tone. One thing that makes learning scales easier than you might think at first glance, it that the minor and major pentatonic scales for guitar use the exact same shapes as each other.

Tablature

One of the unique factors of learning the guitar is that you don't have to learn how to read standard music notation. What are guitar tablature or 'tabs' as they are more commonly known and why is guitar tablature so important in guitar music? Guitar tablature was invented as a shorthand form of musical notation specifically for the guitar. It does have some limitation as guitar tablature will show you what note to play and where on the fretborad, but it will not tell you how long to play the note. The best guitar instructors will  suggest that you use everything available to you. Today, you can take beginner guitar lessons online that will show you how to play everything you want, without ever opening a book. Todays online guitar lessons use video, audio, flash, MIDI, and tablature. And , if you want to learn specific songs, there is a vast repository of guitar tablature online.

Learning guitar, like anything, is a process, and practice makes improvement. Be sure that you enjoy the process of practicing. If you can't find ways to enjoy this time you will find your practice to be a chore and the spark that led you to want to learn the guitar will be lost. or you will find that learning the guitar is not for you.
